May 18, 1961, Dr. Robert Luther Shannon, retired New Albany, MS. optometrist, died at 10:45 a.m. Thursday at Shands Hospital of a heart attack suffered four days ago. He was 80.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at A.R. Presbyterian Church, with burial in New Albany Cemetery, and Masonic graveside services. The Rev. E. S. Hall of Batesville will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Grady Oates. Smallwood Funeral Home will be in charge.
Dr, Shannon was born in Tippah County and had made his home in New Albany for 60 years. Having practiced optometry for 50 years. He retired 10 years ago. He was a member of the Christian Church, a Mason, and a Shriner.
He was an Optometrist, Jeweler, Watchmaker, Postal Telegraph operator, worked for GM&O Railroad, and invented the first automatic fire alarm system. Invention was at beginning of great depression and was unable to finance...Lost patent rights, due to it's importance to society.
He leaves three sons: John Shannon of Memphis, TN, William Shannon of New Oleans, Dr. P. Shannon: four daughters: Mrs Ruby Lucas, Mrs., Hermie Pierce, Mrs. Mary Gruner, all of Memphis, and Mrs. Ophelia Arnold of Mobile, AL; four brothers: Lester Shannon of Tiplersville, MS., J.B. Shannon Sr. of Miami Springs, Fl, L.D. Shannon of Bedfore VA, Walter Shannon of Helena, Ark., one sister, Mrs. Vergie Thornton of Tiplersville; 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
